On July 10th, five of us from Mississauga hopped into a minivan and headed to Warsaw Caves, located in Lakefield, ON, past Peterborough. It is approximately 2 1/2 hr drive each way. My first adventure started at 8am and ended at 7:30pm. Our Adventurers included Alice, Martin, Oli, Dave and myself.
We arrived at the cave site around 11:30ish, just in time for a picnic at the sandy beach. Lunch consisted of tuna sandwiches, roast beef or cooked ham depending on what you like. It's a make your own lunch deal. After filling our tummies w/ yummies, all of us prepared to go to the "Caves." Going into the caves, we had two small flashlights, one mini flashlight and a few glowsticks.
There were a total of seven marked caves. Most of the caves were low ceilings and very damp if not wet. Cave#4 was known as the "glacier". The entrance to that cave was so small, narrow and dark that you had to slide into the hole carefully. For this particular cave, Dave the Explorer, went down into the hole first to examine it, followed by Alice, me, and Oli. This was a tricky entrance, as you had to slide into the cave backwards b/c a large portion of the entrance going down was ice. Mind you, this is also late spring and it was iced. It just happened that as I slid down the entrance ever so carefully, that my sweater got caught and my bare skin(tummy) was against the ice. It was soooooooo cold. After dropping down five/six feet, I crouched down at one the sides and waited for the group. Not knowingly, I was sliding on more wet ice. Landed on my bum a couple times.
Another cave worth mentioning was cave#6. Everyone in the group went into this one. By this point, we only had two small flashlights that were barely working, so we all had to trust each other and help each other along the way. The group was able to go quite some ways into this cave and just sit around and chat for a bit, deep into the labyrenth...hahaha...I think this is the one where a toad fell in and knowingly me, I SCREAMED. The boyz, however, came to my rescue and carried the little fella back to the surface. Soooooooooo not bats in the caves, just a toad at least what I could see.
After the caving, our group went to look at some "kettles" and went to the "lookout" point. This required some climbing down, like 30ft drop. The lookout point was very realaxing...The boyz took a snooooze while Alice and I did some girl chat=) Around 4:30pm we all headed back to the car and headed back into the city and said goodbye to our "first adventure".
No one was seriously injured on this trip, just minor cuts and bruises on myself and Oli. Of course, we were all dirty and wet, so luckily I wore track pants and had gloves on. The gang had snacks and rested at the minivan before heading back. I took a nice snooze in the trunk (trunk was not closed). Overall, this was a "Wow Adventure." I'm glad I went on this trip. It was worth the drive and the effort=)
